How to tell someone you're struggling with your mental health

How to tell a friend, family member or GP that you're struggling: simple ways to start the conversation when opening up feels daunting.
You don't need the perfect words
Many people wait until they can explain exactly how they feel. You don't have to. "I've not been feeling myself lately" is a good start.
Ways to start
Choose someone you trust and a time without rush — a walk or a drive can make it easier than face to face.
If saying it out loud is hard, write it in a message or letter first.
With your GP, it can help to note down what you've noticed, how long it's been going on and how it affects your day.
If you'd rather talk to someone anonymous, Samaritans (116 123) and Shout (text 85258) are free and confidential.
