Asking for help when it feels hard: small steps that make it easier
21 October 2026 ยท 4 min read
Finding it hard to ask for mental health support? Peer advice on why it feels so difficult, first small steps, and where to turn in the UK.
Why it feels so hard
Worrying about being a burden, not wanting to seem weak, or not knowing what you'd even say are some of the most common reasons people hold back. They're understandable, and they're not the truth about you.
Start smaller than you think
You don't have to explain everything at once. "I'm having a rough time, can we talk later?" is a complete first step.
Writing it down first, or sending a text instead of speaking, can take the pressure off.
Who you can turn to
A trusted friend or family member, a peer chat room, your GP, or NHS Talking Therapies. If talking is too much, you can text SHOUT to 85258 any time.
If you're in crisis, call Samaritans on 116 123 or 999 if you're in immediate danger.
If the first try doesn't go well
Not everyone responds the way we hope. That says more about them than about you. Try someone else; the right response is out there.
