Can't sleep because of anxiety? Better sleep for better mental health
7 October 2026 · 4 min read
Can't sleep because your mind won't switch off? How sleep and mood are linked, and gentle wind-down habits for restless, anxious nights.
Sleep and mood go together
Poor sleep can make low mood and anxiety feel heavier, and a worried mind can keep you awake. Small changes to your evening can help break the cycle.
Wind-down habits
Keep a similar wake-up time each day, even at weekends.
Put screens away 30–60 minutes before bed and dim the lights.
Keep a notepad by the bed to write down thoughts that keep circling.
If you can't sleep after about 20 minutes, get up and do something calm in low light, then try again.
When to get help
If poor sleep lasts for weeks and is affecting your day, speak to your GP.
